Basic Level A2 – B1 Exam

Exam in Slovenian as a Second and Foreign Language at the Basic Level (A2–B1)
The CDI Univerzum in collaboration with the Center for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language (Department of Slovenian Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana), conducts exams at the basic level according to the publicly valid educational program Slovenian as a Second and Foreign Language. The exams are intended for anyone who needs a publicly valid certificate of Slovenian language proficiency for official purposes (for example, for work or obtaining Slovenian citizenship).

How to Apply?

Please send or personally deliver the application form to CDI Univerzum (Grošljeva 4, 1000 Ljubljana) no later than ten days before the exam date. If the exam date is already closed, you will be scheduled for the next one. The cost of the exam is 162,00 €. If possible, please pay the amount online (via the online store); otherwise, several payment methods are available (listed below).

Who can take the exam?

Anyone can apply for the Slovenian language exam, even if you have not previously studied under the program “Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language” or completed exam preparations. Before applying for the exam, we recommend visiting or calling CDI Univerzum, where you can familiarize yourself with the exam procedure and tasks. You will receive support in preparing for the exam and guidance on how to approach your studies.

What about cancellations?

You can cancel your exam registration no later than two working days before the exam takes place. In this case, you will be rescheduled for the next exam date, or you will receive an 85% refund of the exam fee. If you withdraw from the exam without cancellation, you must re-register for the exam and pay the full fee again.

How is the exam conducted?

The exam in Slovenian language proficiency consists of: Written part: This part of the exam assesses listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and written expression. You need to have a pen, as other materials are not allowed and Oral part: The oral part involves a conversation on various topics of general language use.

Candidates must prove their identity with a valid personal document that includes a photo. The written and oral parts of the exam are typically conducted on the same day.

The structure of the exam at the basic level

How is the exam evaluated?

The exams have a threshold value set at 60%. This means that a candidate passes the exam if they achieve at least 60% of the points in each part. At the basic level, a candidate also passes the exam if they reach a B1 level (85% or more) in three parts of the exam and score between 50% and 59% in one part. The final grade for the exam is descriptive: “passed” or “not passed.” Candidates will receive their exam results no later than 30 working days after taking the exam. If you successfully pass the exam, you will receive a certificate of proficiency in Slovenian as a second and foreign language, along with an attachment. If your exam result is negative, you will receive a report on your exam performance. You can view a sample exam and the grading criteria here.

You can submit a complaint regarding the examination process within 8 days of taking the exam, and a complaint regarding the exam results within 8 days of receiving notification of the result. Address your complaint to the Appeals Committee of the Examination Center (Examination Center, Center for Slovenian as a Second and Foreign Language, Trubarjeva 3, 1000 Ljubljana).
